Athy Town Council has appealed to householders and businesses to conserve water, following a sharp rise in demand and possible restrictions to the local and Regional supplies.
The current shortage has two principal causes:
· Taps being left running to prevent freezing
· Watermains bursting as a result of freezing and thawing.
Demand for water in Athy has increased at an accelerated rate over recent days and cannot be sustained.
The Town Council may be faced with having to conserve supplies as best it can. Measures to secure this are being examined and are likely to include pressure reductions at night. Homes and premises on high ground and at the end of pipelines are most likely to be affected by the conservation measures - a side-effect which is regrettable but unavoidable.
Water supplies are generally adequate for the Town's needs, and there is sufficient for everyone if resources are used with care. The council will make further arrangements to augment supplies through the use of tankers, if the situation becomes critical.

Further updates will be published on Town Council website.
