severe weather up-date

To: Heads of Industry Representative Bodies (IBEC incl SFA & Retail Ireland, ISME, Chambers Ireland, RGDATA, Dublin City Business Association, Irish Exporters Association, Irish International Freight Association),
You may be aware that the Inter Agency Coordination Meeting on Severe Weather resumed again today and meetings will continue daily. For information, please see attached note from Sean Hogan
Weather
We are entering into what we expect to be a further very challenging period due to snowfalls and very low temperatures. Roads in the North, North West and West are already seriously affected by last night's snow. The east of the country will be hit by snow, possibly this evening, but almost definitely tonight. While snow is difficult to predict, snow fall may occur repeatedly over the next couple of days. There may also be more widespread snow over the south of the country. Daytime temperatures will barely rise above zero for the next few days and the nights will freeze (-5 to -10). This cold weather could last over the next week and, depending on weather patterns, there could be more snow on towards the end of next week.
Salt
The group is optimistic that roads will be kept open and the NRA is actively managing salt supplies. Focus will be given to primary roads.
Other
The group are particularly conscious of the economic impact that a further period of severe weather will have and are keen to hear of any significant problems arising especially in the food and retail sectors. A clear message is being sent out that businesses and householders should clear footpaths after each fall of snow.
I will be emphasising the need to keep roads open and public transport running especially bearing in mind the significance of the Christmas period for the business sector generally. I will also emphasise the need to clear footpaths by all property owners and occupiers. Like last time, I would be keen to ensure ongoing contact - any information/issues from you or your members can be sent to OEP@defence.irlgov.ie. The Office of Emergency Planning will monitor that email address and bring any issues to the Group. Fred Bradley, OEP is a contact point there @ 0878543626.
